Aquatic Weeds

Some of the most common invasive aquatic plants of North America are listed below with a brief description of each plant, their current geographic range and popular methods for control. Note: This is not a complete list. Inquire locally to make sure your aquatic plants are noninvasive species.

Important Note About Chemical Control of Aquatic Plants and Algae
Decomposition of dead plants killed by chemical treatment can cause a rapid decline in dissolved oxygen concentration in your lake or pond. This rapid oxygen depletion can kill fish and other resident aquatic organisms. If aquatic weeds or algae are abundant, it may be necessary to treat your lake or pond in sections, allowing plants in each section to decompose for 2-3 weeks before continuing treatment. Aeration, especially at night, will help prevent oxygen depletion.
